Steps
- Put fruit, spices, and rosemary in a saucepan or small slow cooker.
- Cover with water.
- Bring to a gentle boil, then drop to the lowest simmer.
- Stir in vanilla.
- Let it steam uncovered. Add water whenever the level drops.
Never leave a stovetop pot alone. A slow cooker on Low is safer for all-day scent.
Three more blends that perform
Clean spa house (best after a deep clean): lemon, lime, rosemary, vanilla, mint.
Warm bakery / fall showing: apple, orange, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, nutmeg.
Holiday luxury home: orange, lemon, cranberries, cinnamon, cloves, rosemary, vanilla.
Make it a room spray
Simmer a half batch 20–30 minutes, cool, and strain. Mix 1 cup liquid + 1 cup distilled water + 1 tablespoon vodka or witch hazel. Optional: 10–15 drops lemon or rosemary oil. Mist entryways and fabric — not polished wood.
Open-house checklist
- Air the house for 10 minutes, then close windows.
- Empty trash and the dishwasher.
- Do a fast clean, or book house cleaning services the morning of the showing.
- Start the pot 45–60 minutes before the first buyer.
- Change the HVAC filter if the air still smells stale.
Scent will not hide a leaking roof. It will make a clean listing feel like a luxury home.
What it will not fix
Mold, heavy pet urine, smoke, or a failing HVAC system. Those need enzyme cleaners, moisture control, or a technician — not more cloves.
